Weathering the Winter: Safety Tips for Outdoor Jobs
Posted on 01/09 by Erin Helms
Winter brings cold weather, bitter winds, and slick conditions, making it essential to stay safe while working outdoors. Whether you're facing feet of snow or dealing with icy storms, it’s the perfect time to (snow)brush up on winter safety tips to keep warm and avoid harm. Here’s how you can stay safe and effective during the colder months.
Dress in Layers
Proper layering is critical for staying warm and safe while working outdoors: Base Layer: Wear a lightweight, moisture-wicking material (like wool, silk, or synthetic fabrics) to keep sweat off your skin and stay dry. Middle Layer: Choose wool or synthetic materials to provide insulation and retain body heat. Outer Layer: Opt for a durable, insulated, and moisture-resistant coat to shield against wind, snow, and rain. Ensure nothing is too tight, as that can restrict blood circulation. Wear a warm hat covering your ears, and consider a knit mask for added heat retention. Gloves and work boots should be insulated and water-repellent to protect against the elements.
Recognize Frostbite and Hypothermia
Understanding the signs of frostbite and hypothermia can prevent serious, permanent harm: Early Hypothermia Symptoms: Shivering, fatigue, loss of coordination, confusion, or disorientation. Severe Hypothermia Symptoms: No shivering, blue skin, dilated pupils, slow pulse and breathing, or unconsciousness. Frostbite Symptoms: Numbness, tingling, stinging in extremities, reduced blood flow, blue or pale skin, and aching. If symptoms arise, move indoors immediately. Offer warm—not hot—beverages, remove damp clothing, and use a heater or electric blanket for gradual warming. Avoid rapid rewarming to prevent further nerve or tissue damage.
Prepare Your Vehicle
Work vehicles are critical in winter conditions and should always be ready for emergencies. Maintain Tires: Ensure they have the correct air pressure. Fuel Up: Keep gas tanks full to avoid getting stranded. Check Washer Fluid: Use winter-grade windshield washer fluid. Emergency Kit: Stock essentials like jumper cables, a reflective blanket, non-perishable snacks, phone chargers, flares, and first-aid supplies. Prepared vehicles are essential not just for your team’s safety but also for assisting others in need during a storm.
